Carnation: Dianthus caryophyllus, “Flower of Love and of the gods”
One of the oldest cultivated flowers of history is the Carnation. Carnations are said to represent the love of a mother, however, not all carnations should be gifted without thought to their meaning!
Carnations differ from Rose’s in their meaning - though many people find them interchangeable; but this can lead to a misunderstanding in the language of flowers. One thing a person should always know is that carnations are said to be a woman’s flower; given to women exclusively.
A white carnation represents pure love, innocence and can be given for well wishes. They do not represent chastity. This is a flower that one would give to their soul mate or their best friend, it represents love without implicating sexuality.
A pink carnation is similar to the white carnation, however, the pink carnation is the one carnation colour that continues the tradition of carnations being the flower of a mother’s love. Pink carnations are reserved for the love of a mother, and so, are only suitable to be given to a mother in the language of flowers.
A red carnation symbolizes admiration. The lighter the red of the carnation the more it is to suggest that someone is like a mother to you or a best friend, and the darker the more they are a lover to you. Unlike a white carnation a red carnation suggests deep love. This is a suitable flower to give to lovers, wives, and good friends.
All these carnations do not have an event in which they are exclusive, only people in which they are suited.
A yellow carnation is the most dangerous of flower to give to someone. A yellow rose is a symbol of friendship, a yellow carnation is a symbol disappointment. A yellow carnation is given to convey feelings of dislike in actions or events one is partaking in.
A stripped carnation of any colour is given to signify a refusal. A rejection in any way. Often they are given before a break-up, or a refusal of a business deal.
The last two are not flowers you want to give lightly.
Finally, the purple carnation is rather an enigma. It signifies capriciousness; fickle and erratic. It is not clear when to give this flower, but it is believed that this flower is given when you had no other reason to give a flower. When you wanted to give a flower on a whim with no meanings to the flower language.
With that said the language of flowers is just a guideline, feel free to give whichever flowers you want, but it is always good to know what the flower actually means before you give it to someone…
